In the 1870s, the American railway company developed railway uniforms. Still, engineers, boiler workers, and other types of work needed more robust and durable clothing to prevent oil pollution and soot cinders. By the 1890s, engineers and boiler workers had evolved their workwear, including a soft and durable hat, usually made of denim or tannic cloth.
