The aircraft carrier deck crew wore N-1 deck jackets during World War II and the Korean War. The thick cotton shell and alpaca or wool lining provided the necessary warmth and protection from the elements during extreme cold weather conditions. The U.S. Navy initially produced these jackets in Navy blue to symbolize the Navy before switching to Khaki.
The U.S. Navy developed three "N" systems to address different climate conditions: the N-1 for cold climates, the N-2 for rainy conditions, and the N-3 for tropical climates. Despite these classifications, old photographs reveal that sailors rarely adhered to these regulations, often mixing and matching pieces to suit their layering needs and personal preferences.
