The M-1951 (or M51) Parka, commonly known as the fishtail parka, was designed by the US Army during the Korean War to cope with severe cold weather, replacing the M-48 Parka. Early M-51 Parkas were made of heavy cotton sateen fabric, providing a thicker and more durable layer. The distinctive fishtail design allowed soldiers to tie the parka around their legs for added cold-weather protection. Additionally, the M-51 Parka could accommodate a wool liner on the inside for extra warmth.
